Minnesota PRSA Starts Member Mentorship Program

Are you a member of Minnesota PRSA? If so, I have some exciting news! If not, well maybe this will persuade you! Minnesota PRSA is launching a member Mentorship Program.

The goal of the program is to allow newer public relations practitioners to grow professionally through their association with a seasoned practitioner and experienced professionals the chance to give back and help ensure the future growth of the public relations profession.

Mentoring relationships can give people the insights they need to take the next step in their careers, or give them the inspiration to truly excel. Mentors and protégés can share in each other's successes and offer support during challenging career moments.

But a mentorship relationship is more than just a cheerleading session or job search help, it's an opportunity to help guide newer professionals through the nuts and bolts of public relations, and show them how to turn theory into practice. It's a mentor's chance to help ensure that tomorrow's public relations leaders have the tools they need to move the profession forward.

Available only to members of Minnesota PRSA and PRSSA, the Mentorship Program is designed to address both immediate and long-term member needs. The Program provides two venues for members to seek counsel and guidance:

  • Traditional one-on-one mentor/protégé relationships that matches a mentor and a protégé who have similar areas of work experience and mutual interests. Following an initial face-to-face meeting, the mentor and protégé determine the dynamics and frequency of the relationship.
  • eMentoring program where members can submit questions online and receive confidential responses via e-mail from a panel of local senior professionals.

Recognizing that being a mentor or a protégé may be a new experience for some, Minnesota PRSA developed a mentorship resource library that provides site of articles and materials focusing on how to develop and foster a mutually beneficial mentoring relationship.

If you have questions on the program or would like more information, please contact Eva Keiser, APR at or .

Caguin and Husband wish they knew how to quit Colle+McVoy

Mike Caguin and Eric Husband wish they knew how to quit Colle+McVoy. But just over a year after they left the agency to work as senior creatives for Butler Shine Stern and Partners in Sausalito, Calif., the two returned to Minneapolis to handle ACD responsibilities for Colle+McVoy.

"Why are we back? Simple, Colle+McVoy is doing great work and has lots of potential. And we wanted to get back to Minnesota." said Caguin.

"When we left, things were just starting to get rolling here at Colle+McVoy. Butler Shine was an offer we couldn’t pass up, but we felt it was a good time to come back," said Husband.

For those of you keeping score, it's Caguin and Husband's third time back at Colle+McVoy.

While at Butler Shine, Husband and Caguin worked on BMW MINI, Sun Microsystems, Coca-Cola and Sprite. The team helped create the MINI fuel economy campaign and the MINI shared space campaign—a series of ads that take advantage of the car’s small size to donate the remaining ad space to nonprofits.

"It's of course a compliment to have them back, in our new downtown space, working on our clients instead of someone else's," says John Jarvis, Colle+McVoy CEO and chief creative officer. "That's nice, but really, most of all, we like them. And their work isn't bad either."

For Your Usefull/Useless Information File

It may not come as a surprise to those who know me, but I pride myself on being ahead of the technology curve. At times however, I see someone do something on the computer that makes me wonder if I am a total computer idiot. Keyboard shortcuts is one area I could improve on.

For example, the other day I was sitting in a meeting where a video was being shown. It is always awkward when showing a video in Windows Media Player to make it a full screen without interrupting the movie. Well, I learned that by clicking Alt+Enter it makes it full screen or if you prefer to use Real Player for video it is Ctrl+3.

Then later that week, I was watching a co-worker trying to insert a row in an Excel spreadsheet. Imagine my delight when I saw that after inserting one row you can repeat this move by clicking F4, which is the repeat key. Awesome!

My point? There are a million shortcuts out there and every once in awhile you are hit with one that is so obvious (and helpful) it makes you wonder why you never knew about it before. Anybody else feel my pain?

For a complete list of Microsoft shortcuts click here.

Twin Cities AWC now Minnesota Women in Communications

The Association of Women in Communications Twin Cities announces a new chapter in its 86-year history. (MWC) is the Twin Cities newest professional association, created to meet the dynamic needs of the current membership and further the support of the local professional communications industry. The new organization will host a kick-off event, “Energizing Business, Transforming Careers,” open to all interested professionals on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Minneapolis Central Library.

Since the early 1920s, the Association for Women in Communications Twin Cities has played an active role in the careers of local communicators. From hosting renowned speakers to fighting illiteracy, the local chapter of the national organization has been dedicated to serving its members and the community.

Responding to a membership survey that indicated a clear preference for the benefits provided at a local level, the AWC Twin Cities Board of Directors approved the formation of an independent organization. Effective September 6, 2006, AWC Twin Cities will discontinue its official chapter relationship with the national organization of the Association for Women in Communications and launch Minnesota Women in Communications.

“While the decision to form an independent organization was a difficult one to make, it clearly was the most logical choice. This growing metropolitan area is home to a prospering communications industry that deserves more opportunities for professional development and more awareness as to the positive contributions communicators make within our business community,” says MWC president, Sarah Sladek.

Leading the launch of this new organization is Minnesota Women in Communications’ 2006-07 Board of Directors:
  • President: Sarah Sladek, Limelight Communications, Inc.
  • Vice President: Kary Delaria, independent public relations professional
  • Past-President: Barb Ernster, editorial consultant/writer
  • Chief Events Officer, Wendy T. Huckaby, YMCA Twin Cities
  • Events Officer, Dawn Skelly, Carlson School of Management
  • Chief Marketing Officer: Kate Roberts Edenborg, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare
  • Marketing Officer: Sara Masters, RSM McGladrey
  • Chief Member Benefits Officer: Wendy Zins, Wendy Zins Photography
  • Member Benefits Officer: Maureen Mook, Wells Fargo
  • Treasurer: Janette Law, Tableau Productions
MWC’s board of directors will introduce the new association at the kick-off event, “Energizing Business, Transforming Careers,” on Thursday, October 5 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the new Minneapolis Central Library.

In addition to unveiling the new MWC identity, the event will feature presentations by Laurie Healy, Iconoculture’s director of corporate marketing, and Jennifer Kompelien, principal of Open Dynamics, Inc. The speakers will inform attendees how to energize their business and transform their careers by providing trend projections, career coaching, and skill assessments.

The MWC kick-off event is made possible by the following sponsors: Amundson Communications; Inetium – Business-Intimate Technology Solutions; Amy Holewa, Income Planning Group LLC; Faith McGown, Coldwell Banker Burnet; Jill Middleton, Bankers Mortgage Company.

Remembering the 5th Anniversary of September 11

How sobering it is to think back five years ago today. I had been married 6 months almost to the day. I was at work early that day and was struggling to get on the internet to read the Star Tribune business section. It was amazing how quickly my frustration change to grief when I learned the reason for the slow internet access was what we now have coined the events of September 11.

Today, as I look back on the tragedy my thoughts and prayers go out to the families that lost loved ones that day and in the days following. I offer a special thanks to all our service men and women who responded that day and who have helped to keep our homeland safe since then.

In the words of poet, George Santayana, those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it. We must never forget.

New Digs for Mayor Rybak?

Should Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak ever decide to switch the podium for the pen, there could be a copywriter job waiting for him at Minneapolis’ "newest" downtown agency, Colle + McVoy.

The mayor, well known for supporting downtown investment and championing business growth, yesterday received the keys to Colle + McVoy in honor of “City of Minneapolis Day” – a proclamation by the 130-person advertising, marketing and public relations agency to mark its first day in new offices in the historic Wyman Building at First Avenue North and Fourth Street.

Colle + McVoy CEO John Jarvis presented Mayor Rybak with the keys to the agency and declared Tuesday, September 5, "City of Minneapolis Day" at a special event outside the Wyman Building. The mayor, Colle + McVoy employees and their new Warehouse District neighbors were treated to and entertained by the pulsating, percussive sounds of local band Savage Aural Hotbed.

"It would be a little presumptuous to ask the mayor to declare today 'Colle+McVoy' Day," says Jarvis. "We’d wait at least a week or so for something like that. But we are proud to be part of the booming downtown community and declared today City of Minneapolis Day to honor Minneapolis’ business success and to thank R.T. Rybak and his staff for creating an attractive and energizing place for businesses to converge and call home."

Jarvis gave Mayor Rybak a warm welcome and the keys to the agency should the mayor ever decide to drop by or lend a hand with the agency’s business or long list of non-profit clients.

"We know R.T. can turn a phrase or two and get things done," adds Jarvis. "So if he ever wants to try his hand at copywriting we’ll have a chair waiting for him among our teams. Now, he can let himself in."

Colle + McVoy also has another, equally serious order of business to attend to on its first day in its new space – the announcement of its new "bar of record." Although response was fast and furious to an agency request for proposal (RFP) to all neighborhood bars and restaurants, The Imperial Room, just across the street, won out with the creation of a signature "Colle+McVoyage" blueberry and Stoli cocktail. "They obviously know a good business opportunity when they see it. We agency types like to let off steam after a busy day in the office," adds Jarvis. "I think the whole neighborhood’s going to see a little boom in business once all 130 of us are let loose in the area."
